Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy – treatment by movement. Term kinesitherapy (the equivalent of the term physiotherapy) literally means – motion therapy and comes from the Greek words “kinesis”– movement and “therapeia” – treatment. It is a method of treating and rehabilitating patients using physical exercises, natural factors and therapeutic modalities (heat, water, cold, electrostimulation, massage, etc.). Physiotherapy is one of the allied health professions. It is provided by physiotherapists who promote, maintain, or restore health through physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, patient education, physical intervention, rehabilitation, disease prevention, and health promotion.

What is physiotherapy

A characteristic feature of physiotherapy is the active use of physical exercises. By performing physical exercises, the patient becomes an active participant in the treatment process. This is an important distinguishing feature of physiotherapy from other methods of treatment.

Physiotherapy is a natural method of treatment based on the use of movement as the main biological function of the body, and proper body movements help to renew, improve and maintain the functional condition of bones, muscles, cardiovascular and respiratory and other systems. Movement function stimulates the activity of all body systems, increases the overall work capacity of the patient. As a natural method, physiotherapy can be applied to patients of any age.

Physiotherapy is a non-specific method of treatment, and exercises is a non-specific stimulus. Any physical exercise involves all circuits of the nervous system, and the metabolic products produced during muscle work enter the general bloodstream and stimulate all body systems.

Physiotherapy is a method of functional treatment because systematic and dosed physical training increases the patient’s functional adaptation.

Physiotherapy is an important part of complex treatment and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy is combined with therapeutic modalities, use of medications (and even complements it), surgical treatment (reduces the risk of postoperative complications, accelerates the healing of surgical wounds, etc.).
